Nischal Basnet is an established director, actor and recently a singer of Nepali films. Born on 17 January 1981 he has a Bachelors degree in film making from Oscar International College. He got married to film actress Swastima Khadka on 17 February 2016. Nischal made a huge splash from his directorial debut movie “LOOT” the film was very successful commercially; most of the critics think LOOT is a turning point of Nepali Cinema. He has acted in a hit movie of 2013 “Kabaddi” which was made into the sequel “Kabbadi Kabaddi”. He is from Charpane, Jhapa. Nischal was interested in films right from the beginning. He was not satisfied with film industry back then. He thought there was lot of vulgarity. He liked the movie “Kagbeni’’ but always felt that Nepali movies have a long way to go. Nischal always wanted to make good Nepali films, after he came back from Sydney he looked for an opportunity to get back working into Nepali Film Industry. He did a lot of study and research to learn the process of film making. He got a chance to work as Production assistant in the film “Goodbye Kathmandu”. He also worked on script writing and that was when he materialized a robbery based film and the product was “LOOT”. The songs and dialogues of LOOT were very popular among the audience. His next venture, “TALAKJUNG Vs TULKE” was critically acclaimed movie and was an official entry of Nepali film to Academy Awards. Kabbadi was also a blockbuster and marked him as a versatile actor. Nischal only has a bad habit of smoking but he is very efficient in his work. Nischal said during an interview that all he wanted to do was prove himself as a film maker. He wanted to be different from the league and make an impact. The rest followed him. He believes that a transition has come to the audience who represent a majority of younger generation and making films by not counting them would eventually hit a false note. Since the younger audience wants to see something new their needs should be fulfilled by the film makers. Filmmakers must stress on experimenting with new subjects to come up with strong commercial films. He also stressed on women-centric films which are not seen often.
His upcoming film is “Dui Rupaiyaan” as Jureli in the movie. Swastima is also in this movie and is geared for release on 23 Bhadra 2074. Basnet also suffered from heart break and disappointments during the initial stage. He thinks success and failure are two sides of a coin. If it wasn’t for his toil and dedication to make films, act and entertain the audience he would never be the person he wanted to be. His message is “struggle and setbacks always pushed the limits to achieve more and more and become better’’. Competition is with himself not with others.
